Alvin Frazier Quintet in Tribute to Miles Davis

Alvin Frazier is a talented guy. He writes and plays music, he sings and he acts. While he's been working on making his way as an actor, music will always be his first love. His latest role finds him playing a member of Miles Davis’ band in the Miles Davis biopic "Miles Ahead".

In a case of life imitating art, Frazier will be leading his own quintet in a tribute to Davis. If Frazier were able to assemble his own fantasy lineup, he would reach back into the past and enlist the services of a few legends that’ve passed on. “I would definitely say George Duke and Joe Sample on the keys,” Frazier carefully says as he mentally flips through his influences. “Stanley Clarke, George Benson and Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie on the drums. I like his style on the drums. Second bass player would be Louis Johnson from the Brothers Johnson."

If that list is any indication of the talent Frazier works with, then NightTown is in for one hell of a show.

Versatile Cleveland guitarist/singer/composer Alvin Frazier has made a mark in several genres of music including jazz, contemporary Christian, film scoring and pop. And while much of his own work often leans to the “smoother” side of jazz, he’s also a fan of legendary groundbreaking trumpet player Miles Davis and even made a brief appearance in the new Don Cheadle-starring and -directed biopic Miles Ahead.

Now he’ll be bringing his quintet to Nighttown for “Miles: A Retrospective into the Art & Mind of Miles Davis,” playing music inspired by Davis. In addition to himself, the band includes Joseph Eff on keyboards, Frank Walton on trumpet, Jeremiah Napier on bass and Deion Williams on drums. Admission is $20. Call Nighttown at 216-795-0550 to purchase tickets.

Alvin joins the cast of "SOULmate?"

This fall Alvin will be returning to where his acting career all began...the theater. He just recently signed on to play the leading man in playwright Philly Weeden's "SOULmate?" stage play opposite actress and vocalist Taral Hicks. Many of you may remember her from the films "A Bronx Tale" & "Belly". We ALL remember Keisha! She also scored a HIT single with a 1998 remake of Denise Williams'  "Silly" on Motown records.

SOULmate? is a story about an awkward young boy who falls head over heals for the girl of his dreams. Knowing she is out of his league he does all he can to impress her. He soon realizes all he has to do is to be himself. Through persistence he wins her heart and plans to build a life with her until a secret is revealed that threatens to tear them apart.

The first leg of the tour begins in Columbus, OH at the Walter Armes Learning Center on August 27th. Visit http://www.phillyweeden.com/for additional tour information.

Local Soul Singer Alvin Frazier Successfully Balances Singing & Acting

On a calm and chilly Thursday night late last January, a booming voice could be heard outside reverberating from the walls of a place formerly known as Jezebel's Bayou (after a change of ownership, it now operates as Valo). That voice belongs to Alvin Frazier. With only an acoustic guitar and amplifier, he plays a rendition of his song, "Better," which is currently making waves on several radio stations in the area and beyond. The atmosphere is dimly lit as couples and small groups dine, chat and enjoy the ambiance as Frazier croons original material and also covers versions of songs like the Isley Brothers' "Footsteps In The Dark," Outkast's "Prototype," Michael Jackson's "Lady In My Life" and Jermaine Jackson's "Do What You Do."

"I gotta hit you with a curveball," he says when speaking on the decision to include the elder Jackson's 1984 tune. "That was the jam though."

Cleveland-born and bred, Frazier takes pride in being able to reach the level of success he's had in his career thus far without having to take his talents to a larger market.

"Back when my first album [Love & Faith: Volume 1] came out in 2007, I was thinking that Cleveland was too much work, and I was looking into relocating back then," he says. "But then I thought to myself, ‘You were born and raised here. How would it look if someone called back to get a reference for you and no one knows who you are?’ That really struck a chord with me, so then I thought to just build at home. Just work your hand here first. Thankfully, I was able to show that you can establish yourself as an international artist living here in Cleveland."

However, with two albums released and several years of experience under his belt, the multi-faceted actor and musician is beginning to think that the time to make a move to a larger market may be nearing soon.

"I'm kind of at a glass ceiling right now," he says while discussing his plan to relocate to New York soon. "You can get real complacent and be cool with being the big man on campus here, but the vision I have for myself was always bigger than that. The clothes are starting to get snug and you're still trying to do the same things and you can't because the seams are starting to bust out. That lets you know it's time to do something different."

In the meanwhile, Frazier plans to continue to promote his latest album, A Wonderful Love: Love & Faith Vol. 2, an album of soul tunes that show off Frazier’s strong voice, perform at various venues across the area and work on recording his third album.

And then there’s the movies. In a set of follow-up interviews with Frazier, he was able to talk more about some of the successes he’s been having on both the big and small screen as well as his progress with his latest album.

“I'm not sure that we got to talk about it, but I've been doing some acting as well. I was just in With This Ring with Jill Scott and Gabrielle Union,” he says. In addition to that film, Frazier has also made appearances in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, A Murder in the Park and #50Fathers along with a pilot for a webseries called DAP.

Over the summer, Frazier worked with a group of kids from Open Doors Academy and took them through the entire process of creating a movie over the course of two weeks.

“That was a great experience because I love working with children,” he says. “Now, I had never done a summer camp before but it was a good challenge for me to take the things that I had learned over the years and in turn put together a comprehensive camp for kids. They worked hard. I took them through so much stuff, I don’t know how we did it.”

His latest role finds him playing a member of Miles Davis’ band in the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, which has its nationwide release on April 1 (a Cleveland release is TBA).

“It’s a good feeling. I’m excited,” Frazier says about the buzz the movie has been generating. “I was a Miles fan long before I was a part of this film. I had read his autobiography three times before I got a part in the film, so I was already real hip to Miles.”

Second bass player would be Louis Johnson from the Brothers Johnson. If I initially had to make up a unit of about five or six cats, off the top of my head those guys would be it.”

His new album is slated for release later this summer, and Frazier says he looks forward to getting the first single out to radio stations in the near future.

"The new album is a little different from my first two,” says Frazier. “But you know as an artist, you kinda need that. When I was trying to work on new material, I was feeling like I had hit a wall. The production style that I used on my first and second albums wasn’t giving me the kind of creative energy I needed to do new music. So I said, ‘Let me think outside of the box of how I normally produce and go a different way,’ and that helped to spark some ideas and led to some really good music. I have a few more songs to finish. I have a good idea of what the first single is going to be and I think we’re going to look at getting that to radio in middle to late May, definitely by June.”

A Wonderful Love: Love & Faith Vol. 2 listed among best R&B / Soul albums of 2013!!

For alvin frazier the continent of Japan will always hold a special place in his heart. From the very beginning with the release of his debut album "Love & Faith: Vol. 1" in 2007, music lovers in Japan have been faithfully supporting the gifted artist and were first in helping him become established internationally as an indie recording artist.

Now with the release of his sophomore project "A Wonderful Love: Love & Faith Vol. 2" they have done it again listing the album amongst the best R&B / Soul albums of 2013 at #2. Other artists on the list of ten albums include Joe, Avant, Raheem DeVaughn, TGT and Tamar Braxton. Looks like alvin is in some pretty good company.

Production begins for alvin's new webseries "DAP"

Over the last few years alvin has made a name for himself not only on records and stages but also on stage in plays, television and film as an actor. To add another set of titles to his already growing list of talents, alvin has taken his love for acting a step further by creating, producing, directing and starring in a new webseries about the life of a police detective called "DAP". "DAP, although is about a detective is not another cop show. It deals with life at work and at home. He isn't some super cop either he is a normal guy dealing with real issues that we face in everyday society..." alvin says.

Pre-production began over the summer with a core production team to discuss the feel and direction of the series as well as filming locations. The pilot episode will go into production in the next week. "I feel the the first episode will really set the tone for what this show is all about. I'm excited for many different reasons. One being that it will give me a chance to make the kind of visual entertainment I would like to see and also give me as well as some of my friends who are great actors the opportunity to play roles we haven't been able to play as of yet. I am being stretched in ways I haven't previously but I welcome the challenge..." alvin laughs.

The series has an extremely gifted roster of actors and actresses from the Cleveland area and beyond who will be regular, reoccurring and guest actors on the series. 5 additional episodes are planned for production following the pilot. Look for the series premier in late 2014.

Cleveland Heights native, Antoine Dunn is no stranger to the stage. He has performed throughout the states and abroad, touring with such artists as Anthony Hamilton, Musiq Soulchild, and Estelle. Dunn’s music videos have graced the lineup of BET and his songs are in regular rotation on Sirius. Yet somehow, Cleveland has managed to fall behind in their appreciation of this homegrown talent.

Antoine Dunn puts his heart and soul into every note of his passionate performance.
Danielle Andes

Thankfully, the tides seem to be shifting. Recently, Antoine has been found wooing audiences at venues throughout Cleveland. Last Wednesday he popped up as part of Brent Kirby’s 10x3 Songwriter Showcase at Brother’s Lounge. Backed by a full band, including a 3-piece horn section, he instantly won over the entire room, instigating an audience driven mutiny demanding he perform more than the intended three songs. When he sat down at the piano to share his new single—the powerful and personal, “I Am”—misty and emotional eyes filled the bar.

I Am Antoine Dunn | THE EXPERIENCE hits Cleveland State University’s Waetjen Auditorium this Friday, August 23rd. This celebration of music and life will finally provide Clevelanders an opportunity to understand the workings of Antoine Dunn. His heart and soul goes into every song he writes and erupts with passion and purpose on stage. This evening also highlights local musicians, with Alvin Frazier and Rachel Roberts preceding Dunn on stage.

But Friday night’s event reaches much deeper than just a bunch of great musicians performing on stage. Inspired by the courageous battle fought by Antoine’s mother, the evening is designed to support women currently waging their own war against breast cancer. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Cleveland’s Minority Women with Breast Cancer Uniting, Inc.

Great music and a great cause, there is no better way to spend a Friday night. Tickets range from $20 to $30. Show time is 7:30pm.

"alvin set to appear in crime documentary Porter"

On a warm Summer night on the Southside of Chicago in 1982 a couple would be murdered in cold blood at a city pool. Anthony Porter, a career criminal would be arrested and later convicted for the hideous crime and sentenced to death until through a death penalty amnesty program led by a college professor and his journalist students conduct an investigation that proves the man to be innocent. Their efforts are further rewarded when Alstory Simon confesses to committing the murders. Porter is saved merely 48 hours from his execution and the state of Illinois embarrassed by the breach of justice and the sentencing of an innocent man eliminates the death penalty. There's only one problem. He was guilty as charged...

Alvin will portray "Henry Williams" who was one of the witnesses who saw the murders being committed that fateful summer night. Production begins later this month. Scenes will be filmed on location in Chicago at the actual crime scene. The film is being independently produced by Transition Studios / Whole Truth Films.  Stay tuned. More to come....

"The UK Loves alvin!!"

It seems as if the Eastbrook Music recording artist is the Man in Demand these days. alvin has been making the rounds on television as well as radio shows to promote his new album "A Wonderful Love: Love & Faith Vol. 2". Until recently, the artist had only done appearances on shows here in the US, but because of the new found interest in his music in the UK alvin has found himself being requested for interviews on various soul music shows throughout the continent that have been playing his music. The airplay he has received in the European market has helped to push his new album to the #7 position on the UK Soul Chart.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

“alvin frazier gears up for the “official” release of his highly-anticipated album. Putting the “Soul” back into Soul music”

Sitting in his recording studio listening to the final mixes of his highly anticipated sophomore release “A Wonderful Love: Love & Faith Vol. 2”, alvin was asked to use one word to describe the long-awaited new album.

“Relevant. I could’ve used a few other musical terms like: soulful, melodic & timeless, but to be a bit philosophical, relevant would be more befitting. When I released my first project Love & Faith: Vol. 1”, 6 years ago there weren’t any albums that dealt with love and relationships by way of faith, but in my travels touring here in the U.S. & overseas I discovered that so many people were longing to hear music with depth and sustenance again on the radio…real music.“

Having produced most of the album himself, alvin’s musical tastes & influences are very evident throughout. The album’s first single “Something to Remember”, a duet co-written and performed with Cassandra Stewart is a great mid-tempo song that will instantly become your jam from the moment you put it on with it’s old school feel reminiscent of those great late 70’s early 80’s love ballads that used to have you feeling good when you turned on the radio or put the needle on the record.  The tune hit the airwaves this past Fall and has become an instant anthem for any couple who made a commitment in the name of love to be and stay together.  The song is presently working its way up the UK Soul Chart at the #13 position with a bullet!! A video for the single is currently in production.

“The whole sentiment of the album is what I call a soundtrack for life or Soullife music. I approach the theme from various dynamics. Love, faith and hope ties into and / or effects every situation, every relationship in some form or another by the presence of or the lack thereof. We are living in a time where people need hope, faith and real love. That love can only be found through a relationship with GOD….real talk. “A Wonderful Love: Love & Faith Vol. 2” is a collection of tunes that deals with love by way of faith. Simply put, prepare yourselves to hear Soul music for the soul at its best!!

Shelby Brown to Play at Nighttown Saturday With Cleveland Native Alvin Frazier

Shelby Brown, a contemporary jazz saxophonist from Detroit, had ulterior motives when he persuaded Cleveland musician Alvin Frazier to join his 30-day tour of Asia in 2008.

Brown already appreciated the diverse musical talents that Frazier brought to live performances.

“As a musician, he’s superb,” Brown said by telephone from Detroit Wednesday, while he was preparing for his upcoming show with Frazier at Nighttown. “He sings, he plays multiple instruments, and he’s a songwriter.”

Before the two men met, a mutual friend suggested Brown listen to some of the original music on Frazier’s website. The sax man fell in love with Alvin’s song "I’m in Love Again".

“I’ve got to have this song on my record,” he told himself. “I used the tour I was going on as bait to get Alvin to let me use that song.”

While they toured Japan, South Korea and Singapore, Brown wrote songs for his new CD, The Meaning of Life. Before the pair headed home, not only had he convinced Alvin to let him use the song he wanted so passionately, Alvin offered to perform it and record it.

“I drove in and recorded that song in Cleveland,” Brown said. “Alvin engineered it. Alvin is an extraordinary human being. You don’t meet too many genuine people these days. He is one of those people you can depend on.”

Brown, who recorded the rest of "The Meaning of Life" in Detroit, tends to write music that “feels good to the spirit” and “will move people whether it’s slow or fast.”

His goal is to produce music that warms the heart and relaxes the senses.

“I’d like to have a song in your car CD player that causes you to miss your exit,” he said.

But there will be a lot of energy when Brown and Frazier take the Nighttown stage on Saturday. Brown also likes to share some of his life experiences with audience members.

“They can expect to feel some warmth from me, some encouragement, some motivation,” Brown said.

Brown's passion other than performing is passing down his love of music to youngsters. He has helped create the Music Diversion Program, an organization devoted to helping families who cannot afford instruments for their children and starting arts education programs in public schools without them.

He said he'd like to be successful enough to walk into a concert in any city, see 40 kids out there and say, “Here. Have some instruments.”

Brown and Frazier will perform "I’m in Love Again" live for the first time together at the show, which starts at 8 p.m. at Nighttown, 12387 Cedar Road. Admission is $15.
